(Roseville, Minn. – June 11, 2007) The Fabric Graphics Association of Roseville, Minn, reminds America to replace worn American flags.
“The American flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” (The United States Flag Code). The flag should be burned at a private, non-public location. “Conditions of deterioration include fading, shredding, ripping, dirt and grime that cannot be cleaned, and torn or damaged halyards and grommets that cannot be repaired,” (The National Flag Foundation).
In many American communities, one or more organizations render an important community service by collecting and overseeing the proper disposal of flags. Contact your local Boy Scouts of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or the American Legion, to see if they provide a flag retirement service.
Always display the flag with the blue union field up and to the right; never display the flag upside down, except as a distress signal. Always carry the flag aloft and free; never carry it flat or horizontally in processions or parades. Always keep the flag clean and safe.
The flag is a symbol of America. It is a symbol that each American should respect. Flags are to be displayed only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during hours of darkness.
Inspect your American flag. If your flag needs replacing, discard the old flag in the proper manner. Visit www.banner-flag.com for locations to purchase your new American flag. For additional information on flag etiquette, visit the National Flag Foundation at www.americanflags.org.
